Community First Responder Daniel Carvill is a first year Medical Student studying at the University of

Dan CarvilSouthampton and divides his time in this role between St John in Guernsey and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust in England.

As part of his medical student experience Daniel is also observing ambulance crews and assisting as a volunteer with the Patient Transport Service. Daniel says:- “After approaching St John to join their Community First Responder scheme on the island of Guernsey, I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to observe on the emergency ambulances.

The days I spent on shift with them was a fantastic chance to develop a further understanding of the diversity of the challenges that the paramedics face. As a medical student, very seldom do these opportunities arise, but they are important when learning to deliver high quality patient care.  The opportunity provided me with an invaluable chance to understand the practical world of pre-hospital care, further than any lecture ever could. It’s an area of medicine that really excites me and its importance has become more apparent in recent years.

I would like to thank the staff at St John in Guernsey for giving me this fantastic learning experience, for being so supportive with teaching and for being able to experience riding in an emergency ambulance through rush hour traffic!”
