Meet our volunteers – Vikki Zabel

In 2021 St John volunteers gave thousands of hours of their time to provide first aid cover at local events.

Student nurse Vikki Zabel is one of our dedicated volunteers. She joined St John Ambulance Guernsey last year because she wanted to make a difference. During her first year as a volunteer Vikki covered around fifteen events, including the West Show, North Show, Harbour Carnival and Mud n Fun Run.

“I wanted to join St John to help the community in the time I had free from studying, it’s also a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. I have already covered eleven events and one of the highlights is seeing how thankful people are when they have received treatment.”

Vikki is encouraging more islanders to get involved with St John. “Volunteering and undertaking the training is a good way to learn new skills whilst helping the public. When you have completed the training and assessment and are on duty at events is a great achievement. I would say if you’re thinking about joining St John, just go for it”.

As well as being an event first aider, Vikki was also part of the Covid-19 Decontamination team, giving up her time to help deep clean frontline emergency ambulances during the pandemic. Deep cleaning an ambulance can take over an hour, so the volunteers were able to prepare the vehicles freeing up paramedics so they could respond to other emergencies while the ambulances were being cleaned.
