The manual handling regulations place a duty on every employer and employee to reduce potential injury (and it’s associated costs to a business) from moving and handling operations.

Who should attend?

We recommend that all employers consider training in moving and handling as part of each new employee’s induction.

What you will learn

The course covers how to move objects safely, so the manual handling risks are reduced. Anatomy and physiology are used to raise back awareness and promote good practice in moving objects safely.

Course content

  • Relevant health and safety information
  • Spinal anatomy, relevant structure and function
  • Causes of back pain
  • Risk assessment
  • Base positions and movements leading to more complex moves, including moving and lifting objects and people (if appropriate).

Course duration

Four hours


Students are awarded a certificate of competence upon completion of the course. This course corresponds with NVQ learning outcomes at level 2.
